**Job Description**
The Research Assistant 2 will plan, coordinate, and execute complex, non-routine research assignments focusing on the neural control of breathing. This involves performing animal surgery, acquiring physiological signals related to respiration, analyzing collected data, conducting biochemical assays, and utilizing new techniques to advance the research program’s goals. This position contributes to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s mission to improve global health through research and education, specifically involving work with animals.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Comfort and proficiency handling rodents.
• Compliance with Case Western Reserve University animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures, and regulatory guidelines (Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC).
• Compassion for animals and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission.
• Ability and willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer gear for animal health protection.
• Previous experience in small animal anesthesia and sterile survival surgery.
• Experience with in situ hybridization or RNAScope and immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques and analysis.
• Experience with Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) or Luminex protein analysis techniques.
• Knowledge and understanding of rodent neuroanatomy.
• Familiarity with microscopy acquisition software and analysis/quantification of histologic datasets using ImageJ (or similar software).
• Proficiency with GraphPad Prism and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with diverse individuals.
• Strong organization skills, including multitasking, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, accuracy, time management, and follow-through.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team; highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.
• Effective problem-solving skills; sound judgment and good decision-making in setting up new research procedures and instrumentation.
• Flexibility and ability to work under pressure to meet collaborator and grant deadlines.
• Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
• Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with university values and mission.
• Ability to meet consistent attendance.
• Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face.

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Bachelor of Science degree
• Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program

**Experience**
Experience Required:
• 1 to 3 years (Bachelor of Science degree)
• 2 to 4 years (Associate’s degree)
Other:
• Comfort and proficiency handling rodents
• Previous experience in small animal anesthesia and sterile survival surgery is required.
