**Job Description**
This Research Assistant 2 position supports an NIH-funded human biomarker discovery investigation within the School of Nursing. The project aims to develop cell-free RNA-based diagnostic tests for rapid stroke identification in emergency settings. The role involves maintaining a human specimen biorepository, performing molecular biology tasks like DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, and bacterial cloning, ordering supplies, maintaining lab space and equipment, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The position is key to executing experimental workflows and ensuring smooth lab operations.
**Skills & Abilities**
• Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within molecular biology.
• Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
• Strong theoretical and experiential understanding of basic molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning).
• Experience working with human biofluids (preferred).
• Strong attention to scientific detail and technical problem-solving skills.
• Strong organization skills, including maintaining meticulous and retrievable laboratory records.
• Ability to effectively manage time, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to maintain a clean laboratory working environment.
• Above-average computing skills and comfort using digital laboratory systems (remote equipment monitoring, electronic inventory management, electronic laboratory record keeping, cloud-based data storage).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel).
• Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills, including ability to work with various individuals internal and external to the university.
• Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, and processes.
• Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for students, aligned with university values.
• Ability to meet consistent attendance.
• Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face.
**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Related field (Bachelor’s)
• Biotechnology program (Associate’s)
**Experience**
Experience Required:
• 1 to 3 years (Bachelor’s)
• 2 to 4 years (Associate’s)
Other:
• Experience working with human biofluids (preferred)
