**Job Description**
The Research Assistant 2 will execute complex, non-routine research assignments focusing on the neural control of breathing. Key activities include performing animal surgery, acquiring and analyzing physiological signals related to respiration, conducting biochemical assays, and integrating new techniques to advance the research program. This role supports the School of Medicine’s mission to enhance global health through research and education, specifically involving work with animal models.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Comfort and proficiency handling rodents.
• Compliance with Case Western Reserve University animal research and care policies and regulatory guidelines (Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC).
• Compassion for animals and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission.
• Ability and willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer gear for animal health.
• Previous experience in small animal anesthesia and sterile survival surgery.
• Experience with in situ hybridization or RNAScope and immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques and analysis.
• Experience with Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) or Luminex protein analysis techniques.
• Knowledge and understanding of rodent neuroanatomy.
• Familiarity with microscopy acquisition software and analysis/quantification of histologic datasets using ImageJ (or similar software).
• Proficiency with GraphPad Prism and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to effectively interact with diverse individuals.
• Strong organizational skills, including multi-tasking, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, accuracy, time management, and follow-through.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team; highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and self-starter.
• Effective problem-solving skills, demonstrating sound judgment and good decision-making in setting up new research procedures and instrumentation.
• Flexibility and ability to work under pressure to meet collaborator and grant deadlines.
• Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
• Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students.
• Ability to meet consistent attendance and interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face.

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Science (Bachelor of Science)
• Biotechnology (Associate’s degree in an approved program)

**Experience**
Experience Required:
• 1 to 3 years (BSc)
• 2 to 4 years (Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program)
Other:
• Previous experience in small animal anesthesia and sterile survival surgery is required.
