**Job Description**
The Research Assistant 1 will work under moderate supervision, performing medical and related technical research in a basic science and physiology laboratory. The role involves animal work, particularly with rodents, in NIH-funded research focused on understanding the postnatal development of the respiratory system. The research investigates lung development and the long-term adverse consequences of early exposure to stressors like oxygen on the lung, airway, and heart, aiming to develop therapies for complications after preterm birth.
**Skills & Abilities**
• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the biological sciences.
• Understanding of developmental respiratory physiology (advantageous).
• Ability to operate laboratory equipment, including microscopes and vibratomes for tissue sectioning.
• Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with university values.
• Ability to meet consistent attendance.
• Ability to interact with colleagues and supervisors face-to-face.
• Compliance with university animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures, and regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
• Compassion for animals and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission; ability to handle animals with care and respect.
• Ability and willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer gear for animal health protection.
• Previous experience working with animals (preferred).
• Research skills related to small animal handling (mice/rats) (will be reviewed).
• Knowledge and understanding of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures associated with molecular techniques (PCR, western blots, ELISA, immunohistochemistry) (preferred).
• Strong organizational skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines, attention to detail and accuracy, time management, and follow-through.
• Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.
• Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), database applications, and internet navigation.
• Ability and willingness to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and utilize protective gear.
• Ability and willingness to learn new techniques and procedures as needed, follow established protocols, and request clarification.
**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Science (Bachelor’s degree)
• Biotechnology program (Associate’s degree)
